LRAD LRAD acoustic device is a directional preventing, warning and deterrent system. Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) uses high intensity acoustic output to ensure long-range communication with authority and understanding, but it can also be used with security purposes. It was developed by American Technology Corporation with the aim of establishing communication between large vessels at long distances. Nowadays, it uses has been extended and it has many more applications of those considered at the beginning. LRAD is used to establish communication between ships, to establish security perimeters, to protect infrastructures such as oil rigs, to protect vessels against pirates, in airport controls, at commercial ships or vessels, to communicate in emergency situations, in surveillance coast works, to communicate from helicopters, for mass communication, to break up demonstrations, and it is used by many police departments all over the world. LRAD has two main functions; communicate over long range distances (up to 3000 meters) clearly, but we can also define LRAD device as a “NON- LETHAL acoustic weapon”. The acoustic output power can reach more than 150 decibels so it allows us to solve or deter some particular situations without using the force.
